Unilever Nigeria Plc, a subsidiary of Unilever Oversea holding and one of the world’s leading consumer goods companies is a publicly listed company in Nigeria engaging in trading and manufacturing interest with such iconic brands such as the legendary Omo detergent, lipton tea and Closeup which are all household names in the country.
Unilever was incorporated in Nigeria in 1923 as Lever Brothers (West Africa) Ltd by Lord Leverhulme, but the company’s antecedents have to be traced back to his existing trading interests in Nigeria and West Africa generally. Unilever Nigeria Plc. is engaged in the manufacture and marketing of foods, food ingredients, home and personal care products. Since the 19th century Lord Leverhulme has been greatly involved with the soap business in Britain.
It started as a soap manufacturing company, and is today one of the oldest surviving manufacturing company in Nigeria. After series of mergers/acquisitions, the company diversified into manufacturing and marketing of foods, non-soapy detergents and personal care products. These acquisitions brought in Lipton Nigeria Ltd in 1985, Cheesebrough Ponds Industries Ltd in 1988. Unilever has been a top brand of choice and among the top brands that power Nigeria.
Unilever’s segments are Food Products, Home Care and Personal Care products. Its Foods Products segment includes sale of tea, savory and spreads. The Company’s Home Care segment includes sales of fabric care, household cleaning and water purification products. The international brands include Close-Up toothpaste, Pepsodent toothpaste, LUX beauty soap, Lifebuoy soap, Rexona, Vaseline lotion and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly in the Personal Care Unit of the business; Blue Band Margarine, Lipton Yellow Label Tea and Knorr bouillon cubes in the Foods Unit; and OMO Multi-Active Detergent, Sunlight washing powder and Sunlight Dish washing liquid in the Home Care Unit. Other Regional and local jewels include the Pears Baby Products range and Royco bouillon cubes. It has manufacturing sites in Oregun, Lagos State and Agbara, Ogun State.
